Granny

Lyrics and Performance by Vicki Young
Melody: "Chattahootchie"

One cold day, as I sat thinking,

Wrapped in a quilt my Granny made for me.

I thought about the patterns on that old quilt top;

I thought about the math, the geometry.

My Granny never even thought about the math.

She never once considered a logarithmic path.

She didn’t know a rhombus from a right triangle.

She never ever measured one single angle!

As I sat watching my Granny quilting,

I never knew how much my childhood meant to me.

I never knew the scope of what I was learning –

A lot about love and geometry!

Granny made quilts with tessellations.

She even included isometries.

She divided up circles into equal segments.

She used quite a lot of geometry.

She sewed quarter inch seams with greatest ease.

Her symmetric patterns were sure to please.

She always used templates and not foundations,

No twists or spirals, just simple rotations!

As I sat watching my Granny quilting,

I never knew how much my childhood meant to me.

I never knew the scope of what I was learning –

A lot about love and geometry!
